On September 29, 2020, at the age of 91, passed away a Doctor of Technical Sciences, an Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation, an Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, a founder of INTELS professor Konstantin Pupkov.

Konstantin Pupkov was one of the founders of the Russian school of technical cybernetics, the founder of scientific schools on the statistical dynamics of nonlinear control systems and intelligent systems. He developed methods for statistical analysis of nonlinear control systems, and system analysis of complex dynamic systems. He proposed to describe the dynamics of a human operator by a series of functionals. He conducted the experimental studies of non-stationary random noise, obtained methodology of evaluating test results of systems that are being improved in the process of their development.

Konstantin Pupkov graduated from the Bauman Moscow State Technical University. He headed the Department of Cybernetics at the Moscow Institute of Electronic Engineering (now part of the Higher School of Economics) from 1967 to 1983, the Department of Cybernetics and Mechatronics at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia from 1993 to 2016, and the Department of Informatics and Control at the Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman from 1987 to 2013. More than 100 candidate and 30 doctoral dissertations were supervised by professor Konstantin Pupkov.

About 30 years ago Konstantin Pupkov organized the Symposium “Intelligent Systems” (INTELS), which has been biannually held since then, to highlight the latest advances in artificial intelligence and intelligent control systems.

In the same years, he defined an intelligent control system as “an integration of hardware and software combined by an information process, working in interaction with a person (a group of people) or autonomously, capable of synthesizing a goal based on information and knowledge, if motivated, making decisions for action and finding rational ways.” The capacity of this definition is currently relevant.

Professor Konstantin Pupkov used to cite the statement of the Russian physiologist, a Nobel prize laureate Ivan Pavlov, which in his opinion, could be an epigraph to research in the field of intelligent systems: “The whole life from the simplest organisms to the most complex, including, of course, human beings, is a long series of environment balances that become more complex to the highest degree. A time will come, albeit remote, when mathematical analysis, relying on the natural sciences, will illuminate with majestic equations all these balances, including itself in them”. This time has come.

By decission of Organizing Committee the 14th International Symposium “Intelligent Systems” (INTELS’20) is named after Konstantin Pupkov.
